Tanner Bolt & Nut Case Study
Background:
Tanner Bolt & Nut Corp. is a company that, for more than 25 years, has strived
to make fastener shopping as easy as possible for its customers. Tanner began
as a small, family operated business, and has grown by a strong focus on construction
and industrial fasteners, with specialization in cutting tools and security fasteners.
Tanner’s online business at www.tannerbolt.com meets its customers’ needs through easy
access to its extensive inventory with a click of a button. Tanner’s business is built around Activant’s Acclaim (formerly
known as Prophet21) system, a well-known order processing and inventory control
system for distributors running on an AIX server and a Progress8 database.
Problem:
Prior to being introduced to numberGo, Tanner knew that the Progress8 database,
with its extensive collection of data spanning years of high-volume customer service,
contained a wealth of information covering all aspects of its business. However, armed with only a handful of static flat-file reports,
an ODBC connection, and Excel, they quickly ran into numerous limitations when trying
to access this information.
“I needed to get our data in the hands
of our sales staff without a heavy investment in infrastructure and training, which
would have been inappropriate for our lean operation” says Jeff Tannenbaum, President
of Tanner, “It was clear to me that numerous 30MB excel files and flat file reports
wasn’t going to work. Moreover, I didn’t
want a reporting system that would tax our database and server with possible disruptions
to our very busy order processing system”
Solution:
Tanner was introduced to numberGo by a consultant hired to provide sales training
and management. After downloading the
numberGo Publisher, they were up and running within minutes.
Using the same ODBC connection and queries they had setup for moving their data
into Excel, the numberGo Publisher’s import wizard created a dynamic report document
that they could update with a click of a button. Tanner replicated some of the formulae they had used in their spreadsheet
and created groups which would have been very difficult to do in any of their current
applications.
“We had used pivot tables in Excel before”, continues Jeff, “but after a few minutes
clicking around numberGo’s intuitive pivot table, I instantly knew that I finally
had found an accessible, yet critical tool for our sales staff.”
“We now run our weekly sales meeting around the numberGo report. Every
other click and drag reveals an opportunity that would have been otherwise lost:
a backlog, a missed order, or a customer’s
expansion. Outside our meeting, I can e-mail the concise numberGo document
to a salesperson, who using the free numberGo Reader, can easily drill down and
find the right action to take to cover every opportunity which numberGo uncovers”
“Our purchasing manager peeked in our first Sales meeting using numberGo and immediately
ran back to his desk to download the Publisher with the intent to solve his complex
reporting needs. Its clear to me that
numberGo is going to pay for itself as well as a new projector I plan to buy (to
see more numberGo) within a week or two.”
