Frequently Asked Questions
What does numberGo do?
numberGo is the best and most accessible way to analyze and distribute large or small collections of numerical data. It gives users the flexibility to manipulate information and make valuable discoveries often hidden is masses of data. numberGo combines multi-dimensional database capabilities with a pivot table, powerful charts and graphs within a flexible layout.

Somebody sent me a numberGo file. How do I open it?
You will need the numberGo Reader installed, and either double-click the file or launch numberGo Reader and choose the file from the File Open button or menu.

Do I need a special format to import data into numberGo Publisher?
You can import data from spreadsheets using our in-built import wizard. The spreadsheet wizard will handle both structured data (ever column has a header/every row, a descriptor) and standard balance sheet format.

numberGo also includes a wizard that lets you import relational database with no need to write data query statements.

I tried to install numberGo, and the installation gave a message the the “.NET framework” needed to be installed.. What is the “.NET framework”,and why do I need this?
The Microsoft .NET framework is a software component which can be added to the Windows operating system to provide a common runtime environment for many software applications. The .NET framework is available at no cost to licensed Windows users.

What do you mean by a flexible layout? And what’s the benefit?
A numberGo Workspace consists of a layout composed of 5 panels which contain a pivot table, a set of charts or graphs, and a word processing panel for notes. Each layout is defined as a 'View' assigned to a 'Report'. A Report, in turn, is assigned to a 'Book'.A numberGo file may contain multiple Books, Report and Views. These dimensions allow you to examine data from many perspectives for your own needs and to create startling presentations, even in real time.

Typically, a Book will contain a set of data. A Report will contain the collection of layouts (the Views) and may also apply a global filter to the data contained in the Book. Open the Workspace Map to view the entire library contained in a numberGo file.

What is a pivot table?
A pivot table is a powerful tool which allows you to roll up, filter and sort structured data along any of the dimensions or axis which define your numbers. For example, if you had a list of professional baseball players batting averages over the years (the facts) along with their age, team, country of origin, and experience (the dimensions or axis), a pivot table allows you to calculate the team’s batting average (the roll up), ranked by the player’s country of origin (the sort) and showing only players over 30 year old (the filter) by simply dragging and dropping the buttons which represent facts and elements. Every time you rearrange the buttons the table will be redrawn, displaying the rolled up facts. Pivot tables are a great way to explore, experiment with and present data.

You keep referring to “views” in your documents. What do you mean?
The publisher of a data file might want to convey deeper insight into the data. “Views” are the way to do that. Views can be modified by changing the filters in more dimensions.

How do I modify the filters on my views?
If you want to narrow or broaden your data view, click on its dimension. Choose the items you want displayed by clicking in the box next to the item. You can de-select all items if the list is very long – or if you want to choose only one or a few items from that list. Do this by de-selecting (show all).

How do I setup structured data for numberGo?
If you already have data stored electronically within a file on your hard drive or database, chances are it’s already structured and no setup is required other than a simple import process.

Can I enter data manually using numberGo?
No. Manual entry of data is best accomplished by using a spreadsheet or text editor, saving the file, and importing the file into numberGo using numberGo Publisher. NumberGo Publisher offers the ability to edit the imported data and add expression columns.

What is the limit on how much data I can import and use with numberGo?
The upper limit on numberGo’s capacity is determined by amount of memory installed on your computer. We’ve been able to import more than 2 million rows of data with success on a machine with 500 MB of physical memory installed. The 32-bit version of Windows XP limits process sizes to 2 Gigabytes which roughly translates to 10 million rows by 10 columns.

How do I import data stored within multiple tables in my database?
NumberGo’s importer can use whatever SQL (structured query language) is supported by your database software. This allows you to import data stored in multiple table using an “SELECT – JOIN” SQL statement. Alternatively, you can import from a database view as well as from a table without having to use SQL.

Can I setup and apply formulae or expressions inside numberGo?
Yes. numberGo allows you to create numerical, date-type or string-type fielda which are derived from imported data fields or other expression fields previously created.

How do I keep the data imported into numberGo up-to-date?
Once you import data using numberGo’s Import Wizard, the import process is stored within the numberGo file when saved. Open the Workspace Map, find the data source and click on refresh to repeat the import process. You also have the choice to purge the data previously imported or to add to it incrementally.

Do I need a server to run numberGo?
No. numberGo is not a client-server application. However, you can import data stored on a server.
